KYRGYZSTAN

The Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyzstan) is a country in central Asia. The area was nominally independent until 1864 when it was annexed by Russia. In 1916 unrest culminated in revolution which continued until the area became part of the Turkestan republic and in 1924 became an Autonomous Republic as Kara-Kirghiz, in 1925 changing its name to Kirghiz and in 1936 became a Soviet republic. In 1990 the area became independent and adopted the name Kyrgyz Republic or Kyrgyzstan.
