Liverpool is a city and seaport in north-west England, county town of Merseyside. Its port trade developed in the 17th century and it became an important centre of the slave traffic from Africa to the West Indies and later of the textile industry, importing cotton from America and exporting the textiles produced in Lancashire and Yorkshire. Liverpool's traditional industries of shipbuilding and engineering have declined, but it remains the chief Atlantic port of Europe. It was the birthplace of George Stubbs, A H Clough, W E Gladstone, and the home of the Beatles.
