Livonia was a region of Europe which comprised much of what is today Latvia and Estonia. It was named after the Livs, a Finno-Ugrian people living in part of the coastal region. Conquered and Christianized in the early 13th century by a crusading order of knights, who ruled it until the late 16th century, it was then divided between Lithuania, Poland, and Sweden, and was ceded to Peter the Great of Russia in 1721.
