LONG ISLAND

Long Island is an island off the coast of Connecticut and New York in the USA. Long Island was settled about 1636 by the Dutch. The English settled the eastern portion of the island in 1640. Long Island passed into the hands of the Duke of York in 1664, and again came under Dutch control in 1673. In 1674, the island was again acquired by the British. At the beginning of the American War of Independence George Washington made efforts to defend Long Island against the English. It was taken by Howe in 1776, and was held by Great Britain until the close of the war.
