The republic of Macedonia (also known as the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) is a country in south-east Europe. The ancient region of Macedonia covered a wider area than modern Macedonia, and was settled by Slavs during the 6th century before being conquered by various powers including the Ottoman Empire before being divided between Greece, Blugaria and Serbia in 1913. Following the Great War, the Serbian part of Macedonia which comprises modern Macedonia, became part of the federal state of Yugoslavia. In 1991 Macedonia declared independence.
