MALAWI

The Republic of Malawi is a country in south east Africa. It has a total area of 118,480 km2. The climate is tropical with a rainy season from November to May and a dry season from May to November. The terrain is comprised of a narrow elongated plateau with rolling plains, rounded hills and some mountains. Natural resources are limestone; unexploited deposits of uranium, coal, and bauxite. The religion is 55% Protestant, 20% Roman Catholic, 20% Muslim; traditional indigenous beliefs are also practised. The official language is English, with the national language being Chichewa, and other Bantu languages also being spoken.
Before Britain annexed the region of Malawi in 1891, the area had been the scene of continual warfare between the Yao and Ngoni peoples. In 1907 Britain designated the area the 'Protectorate of Nyasaland'. In 1964 Malawi declared its independence and in 1966 became a republic.
