MALTA

The Republic of Malta (formerly Melita) is an island country in the Mediterranean. It has a total area of 320 km2. The climate is Mediterranean with mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. The terrain is mostly low, rocky, flat to dissected plains and many coastal cliffs. Natural resources are limestone, salt. The religion is 98% Roman Catholic. The official language is English with Maltese and Italian also spoken.
The island of Malta was occupied since early times by the Phoenicians, greeks, Carthaginians, Romans and Arabs before it was invaded by Roger of Sicily in 1090. In 1530 the islands of Malta were given by the Roman Emperor Charles V to the knights of St John of Jersualem. In 1798 Napoleon conquered the islands and in 1814 Britain annexed Malta. During the Second World War Malta was subject to intense bombing and attack by Axis forces, but resisted invasion and was subsequently awarded the George Cross for bravery. In 1964 Malta became independent.
