MANHATTAN

Manhattan is an island, 20 km long and 4 km wide lying between the Hudson and East rivers and forming a borough of the city of New York in the USA. The name Manhattan was apparently the original Indian name of the island on which New York is now situated. In 1613 the first settlement was made, of the nature of a trading-post. In 1626 Peter Minuit, director for the Dutch West India Company, bought the island from the Indians for sixty guilders
