MANILA

Manila is the capital of the Philippines. It was built about 1573 by the Spanish and was a great market of Spanish commerce. In 1762 it was captured by the British and held to ransom for one million sterling, an amount never fully paid. In 1645 an earthquake claimed the lives of 3000 people in Manila and in 1882 a great fire destroyed 4000 houses.
