The terrain is hilly, rugged, rocky. It has no natural resources, but generates revenue through gambling and international banking, having a reputation as a tax haven where criminals can hide money in bank accounts. Monaco was established in 1297 by the House of Grimaldi, the Grimaldi having come from Genoa in Italy and conquered the city. For a short while Monaco was annexed by France during the French Revolution, but in 1814 was resored under the protection of the King of Sardinia. In 1848 Monaco was again annexed by France.
