MOZAMBIQUE

The republic of Mozambique is a country in south east Africa. It has a total area of 801,590 km2. The climate is tropical to subtropical. The terrain is mostly comprosed of coastal lowlands, uplands in the centrem high plateaus in the north-west and mountains in the west. Natural resources are gold, ivory, coal and titanium. The religion is 60% indigenous beliefs, 30% Christian, 10% Muslim. The official language is Portuguese with many indigenous languages also spoken.
Originally occupied by the Bantu people, Mozambique was invaded by Arabs during the 9th century and Portugal in 1505 who exploited the country's gold, ivory and exported the people as slaves to work on sugar plantations in Cuba and Brazil. During the 1960's groups opposed to Portugese rule united and achieved independence in 1974.
