NEW ORLEANS

New Orleans is a commercial and industrial city and river port on the Mississippi river in Louisiana, USA. The city was founded in 1717 by Jean Baptiste Lemoyne de Bienville, under the regency of the duke of Orleans, and a few years later in 1722 was made the capital of the vast territory known as Louisiana. In 1765 the town received the exiles from Acadia, and in 1768 rose in arms against the cession of Louisiana to Spain. The following year the people were compelled to submit by a large Spanish force. In 1788 and 1794 almost the entire city was destroyed by fire. In 1803 the city, with the rest of Louisiana, was turned over to France, and by France to the United States. In August 2005 the city was once again devastated, this time by the tropical storm 'Hurricane Katrina' which flooded and demolished large areas of the city leaving thousands homless and without food, water and power.
