NICARAGUA

The Republic of Nicaragua is a country in Central America. It has a total area of 129,494 km2. The climate is tropical in the lowlands, cooler in the highlands. The terrain is extensive Atlantic coastal plains rising to central interior mountains and a narrow Pacific coastal plain interrupted by volcanoes. Natural resources are gold, silver, copper, tungsten, lead, zinc, timber, fish. The religion is 95% Roman Catholic, 5% Protestant. The official language is Spanish with English also spoken and Indian speaking minorities on the Atlantic coast.
Nicaragua was invaded by Spain in 1522 by Gil Gonzalez de Avila and remained a Spanish possession until 1821 when it was a founder member of the United Provinces of Central America, staying in the union until 1838.
