NORWAY

The Kingdom of Norway is a Scandinavian country in north west Europe. It has a total area of 324,220 km2. The climate is temperate along the coast, modified by the North Atlantic Current with a colder interior which is rainy year- round on the west coast. The terrain is glaciated; mostly high plateaus and rugged mountains broken by fertile valleys; small, scattered plains. The coastline is deeply and uniquely indented by fjords and there is arctic tundra in the north. Natural resources are crude oil, copper, natural gas, pyrites, nickel, iron ore, zinc, lead, fish, timber, hydropower. The religion is 94% Evangelical Lutheran, 4% other Protestant and Roman Catholic, 2% other. The official language is Norwegian with small Lapp- and Finnish-speaking minorities also living in Norway. The area of Norway was originally occupied by tribes of nomadic Sammi peoples under local chieftans until it was united by King Olaf II in 1015. In 1380 Norway and Denmark were united through a royal marriage, remaining under Danish rule until 1814 when Norway was ceded to Sweden, declaring independence in 1905 and prince Carl of denmark was elected king, taking the name Haakon VII.
