OMAN

The Sultanate of Oman is a country in Arabia, south-west Asia. The official language is Arabic with Baluchi and English also spoken. From the 4th to the 7th centuries the area of Oman was under Persian control until it was invaded by the Arabs. The Portuguese invaded in 1507 and occupied the coast until 1658 when the Persians reinvaded the country. Oman became independent in 1749, only to be taken by the British during the late 19th century and once more become indpendent in 1951 as the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman. In 1970, Oman realised a bloodless coup and was renamed the Sultanate of Oman.
