The Probert Encyclopaedia of Places of the World

PALAU

The Republic of Pelau (Belau) is an island group country in the Pacific Ocean. The islands were governed by Spain from 1600 until 1899 when they were sold to germany. In 1947, following the Second World War, Pelau became part of the Trust territory of the Pacific Islands before gaining self government in 1980 and full independence (under American control) in 1994.
