Pensacola is a city in Escambia County, Florida, USA. Pensacola, was first settled by French colonists about 1696 and came into the possession of the Spaniards in 1699. It fell alternately into the hands of the French, Spaniards and British until finally captured by the Spaniards in 1781. This Spanish post, though neutral, allowed the British to enlist there Indians against the United States in the War of 1812 and to make the town a rendezvous for British forces. In response, General Jackson with 4000 men advanced from Port Montgomery, and on November 6th, 1814, demanded from the Spanish Governor possession of the forts. This was refused and early the next day Jackson invaded and stormed the town. The forts were at once surrendered and the British withdrew.
