The Republic of Peru is a country in South America. It has a total area of 1,285,220 km2. The climate varies from tropical in the east to dry desert in the west. The terrain is comprised of a western coastal plain (costa), high and rugged Andes in the centre (sierra) and an eastern lowland jungle of the Amazon Basin (selva). Natural resources are copper, silver, gold, petroleum, timber, fish, iron ore, coal, phosphate, potash. The religion is predominantly Roman Catholic. The language is Spanish and the official language is Quechua with Aymara also spoken. Peru was inhabited by the Chimu people from around 1200 until they were gradually replaced by the Incas, and in 1531 the Spanish arrived, murdering the last Inca emperor in 1533. Peru revolted against Spanish rule without success in 1780, finally realising independence in 1824.
