Portsmouth is a seaport in Hampshire, England. It is home to the Royal Navy. The first dock was built in 1194 by Richard I. In 1495 the world's first dry dock was built at Portsmouth. During the 1930s a strike by dock-yard workers in Portsmouth was broken when dock-yard workers from neighbouring Southampton were brought in. This led to intense hatred between the residents of the two cities, with Portsmouth residents refering to residents of Southampton as 'scummers', while traditional Hampshire residents of Southampton refer to residents of Portsmouth as 'plastic cockneys' on account of the former London residents living in Portsmouth and the apparent adoption of London speech and mannerisms by the residents to the detriment of traditional Hampshire speech and culture.
