PORTUGAL

The Republic of Portugal is a country in south west Europe. It has a total area of 92,080 km2. The climate is maritime temperate; cool and rainy in the north, warmer and drier in the south. The terrain is mountainous north of the Tagus with rolling plains in the south. Natural resources are fish, cork forests, tungsten, iron ore, uranium ore and marble. The religion is 97% Roman Catholic, 1% Protestant denominations, 2% other. The language is Portuguese. Portugal became an independent monarchy in 1139, where after King Alfonso Henriques expelled the Moors. By the 16th century Portugal had become a major world power, with an empire in South America, Africa and Asia. During the 19th century civil war wracked the country and in 1910 the monarchy was overthrown and a republic declared.
