Ravenna is a city near the Adriatic coast in north-east central Italy. It was an important centre in Roman times, Ravenna became the capital of the Ostrogothic kingdom of Italy in the 5th century and afterwards served as capital of the Byzantine Empire of Italy. The richest mosaics of the early Christian period are found there. It became an independent republic in the 13th century and then a papal possession in 1509, remaining in papal hands until 1859.
