Romania, or Rumania, is a country in south east Europe. It has a total area of 237,428 km2. The climate is temperate; cold, cloudy winters with frequent snow and fog; sunny summers with frequent showers and thunderstorms. The terrain in the central Transylvanian Basin is separated from the plain of Moldavia on the east by the CarpathianMountains and separated from the Walachian Plain on the south by the Transylvanian Alps. Natural resources are crude oil, timber, natural gas, coal, iron ore, salt. The religion is 80% Romanian Orthodox; 6% Roman Catholic; 4% Calvinist, Lutheran, Jewish, Baptist. The official language is Romanian with Hungarian and German also spoken. The area of Romania became an independent country in 1878 as a monarchy.
