SAMARIA

Samaria was a city and province of ancient Palestine. The city was founded in 920 BC by Omri 60 km north of Jerusalem. In 721 BC it was taken by the Assyrians under Sargon, and rebuilt by Herod the Great, who erected a temple in honour of Augustus, and named the city Sebaste. In 331 BC it was taken by Alexander the Great.
