SAN FRANCISCO

San Francisco is a city in San Francisco County, California, USA. San Francisco was settled as a fortified town and Spanish mission in 1776. In 1846 an American man-of-war took possession of the town. The discovery of gold in 1849 caused the city to grow enormously. The city was granted a charter in 1850. Three disastrous fires occurred in that year amounting to about $8,000,000 in property destroyed. An important Pacific seaport, San Fransico is regularly hit by earthquakes, one in 1906 practically destroying the city with the loss of 1000 lives.
