SHEFFIELD

Sheffield (recorded in the Domesday Book as Scafeld) is an industrial city in Yorkshire, England in the southern foothills of the Pennines on the river Don. It is famous for its steel industries, and fine cutlery. Sheffield is today Britain's fifth largest city, but in the 17th century was a small town with a reputation for its knives and tools, exploiting the fast-flowing rivers which turned grindstones and hammers. In the second half of the 17th century Sheffield also began to make its own steel and during the Industrial Revolution steel, cutlery and tool production expanded greatly and by 1850 Sheffield was producing 90 per cent of Britain's steel.
