SIERRA LEONE

The Republic of Sierra Leone is a country in west Africa. It has a total area of 71,740 km2. The climate is tropical; hot and humid with a summer rainy season lasting from May to December and a winter dry season lasting from December to April. The terrain is coastal belt of mangrove swamps, wooded hill country, upland plateau, mountains in east. Natural resources are diamonds, titanium ore, bauxite, iron ore, gold, chromite. The religion is 30% Muslim, 30% indigenous beliefs, 10% Christian, 30% other or none. The official language is English with Mende, Temne and Krio also spoken. Sierra Leone was founded as a single city, Freetown in 1787 by British philanthropists as a home for freed slaves, and became a British colony in 1808 with the interior lands being added in 1896. Sierra Leone achieved independence in 1961.
