The Probert Encyclopaedia of Places of the World

SLOVENIA

The Republic of Slovenia is a country of south-east Europe. Slovenia was ruled by the Hapsburgs from 1335, and became a part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. In 1848 Slovenia sought independence. In 1918 Slovenia was incorporated into the kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes which was renamed Yugoslavia in 1929, forming one of the six people's republics of Yugoslavia. With the break-up of Yugoslavia in the late 1980s, Slovenia once more became independent in June 1991.
