Smithfield is a district in the City of London which was celebrated as a horse and cattle fair from 1614 until 1855. In 1357 it played host to jousts at which the Kings of Scotland and France were present. Smithfield was also a place of execution and of burning of heretics, and it was at Smithfield that Wat Tyler was murdered. The cattle market was removed in 1855 and on part of its site the central meat market was erected, with other markets for poultry and vegetables following a few years later.
