Southampton (recorded in the Domesday Book as Hamtone) is a port and city in Hampshire, England. It is situated at the head of Southampton water on a peninsular between the estuaries of the River Test and the River Itchen. It is one of Britain' s biggest container ports, also one of the greenest cities in Britain retaining a large number of wooded copse, oak trees and woodland plants from where it has expanded into the surrounding forests.
