The Probert Encyclopaedia of Places of the World

STOKE-ON-TRENT

Stoke-on-Trent (recorded in the Domesday Book as Stoche) is a city in central England, in north Staffordshire on the River Trent. It is a major centre of the pottery industry. The city was originally a small farm settlement on the river Trent and was later a pottery town and was then later transformed into a city with the amalgamation of five formerly independent and competitive pottery towns: Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Longton and Stoke together with the town of Fenton in 1910.
