Sydney is a port and the capital of New South Wales. It lies on an inlet of the South Pacific and is the largest city in Australia and was the first British settlement, established as a penal colony in 1788 by Arthur Phillip. It developed rapidly after 1820 with the discovery of gold in its hinterland. Today it has a large wool market and three universities.
Sydney is a port in southeast Canada, in Nova Scotia on the northeast of Cape Breton Island. It was the capital of Cape Breton Island until 1820, when the island united administratively with Nova Scotia.
