TOGO

The Republic of Togo is a country in west Africa. It has a total area of 56,790 km2. The climate is tropical; hot and humid in the south; semiarid in the north. The terrain is comprised of gently rolling savannah in the north; hills in the central region; a southern plateau; a low coastal plain with extensive lagoons and marshes. Natural resources are phosphates, limestone, marble. The religion is about 70% indigenous beliefs, 20% Christian, 10% Muslim. The official language is French; major African languages are Ewe and Mina in the south and Dagomba and Kabye in the north.
Togo was a German proctorate until 1914 when it was divided between Britain and France and ruled jointly until 1956 when British Togoland voted to integrate with Ghana and French Togoland voted to become an autonomous republic within the French union.
