TUNISIA

The Republic of Tunisia is a country in north Africa. The language is Arabic and French. The area of modern Tunisia was first settled by Phoenicians during the 8th century BC, who founded Carthage. The Carthagian Empire subsequently grew only to be conquered by Rome during the Punic Wars, and the area subsequently passing to Byzantine rule in 533. In 647 the area was invaded and conquered by Arabs. Between 1574 and 1881 the area was part of the Ottoman Empire before becoming a French protectorate, and in 1956 independence was realised, the monarchy being dissolved in 1957 and a republic declared.
