The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the official title of the country popularly known as 'Britain'. The modern United Kingdom was formed in 1801 by the joining of Ireland to the existing union of England, Wales and Scotland (then known officially as The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland). The first union having been made between England and Wales in 1283 with Scotland joining in 1707. Following independence for Ireland, the title United Kingdom was amended to just include the remaining Irish territory of Northern Ireland.
