VANCOUVER ISLAND

Vancouver Island is an island off the west coast of Canada in the Pacific Ocean, part of the province of British Columbia. Off the W. coast of British Columbia, it has an area of about 20,000 square miles., and is 285 miles long by from 40 to 80 miles broad. It is separated from the USA by the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and from the mainland of British Columbia by Queen Charlotte Sound and the Strait of Georgia. The forested mountainous backbone of the island is a northern continuation of the Coast Range of the USA; its average height is 2,000 feet to 3,000 feet, culminating in Victoria Peak at 7,484 feet. Vancouver surveyed the coast in 1792, and Victoria, the first settlement in British Columbia, was staked out in 1842.
