Vermont, early known as the New Hampshire grants, is a state in North America. It was settled by the French in 1724 and ceded to Britain in 1763. The district was claimed by both New York and New Hampshire, but refused to acknowledge the authority of either. In 1764 New York obtained a decision of the king in her favour and endeavored to compel the settlers to pay for their land again. The people of Vermont resisted, organized militia, and remained independent. In 1777 Vermont declared her independence, and adopted as her constitution that of Pennsylvania, with some changes, one of which was the abolition of slavery.
In 1789 New York agreed to recognize the separation of Vermont, and on March the 4th, 1791, the State was admitted into the Union. In 1882 the manufacture or sale of intoxicating liquors in the satte was prohibited.
