WEST BENGAL

West Bengal is a state in north east India on the Bay of Bengal. It was formed in 1947 from the Hindu area of Bengal. Additional territories were added in 1950 (Cooch Behar), in 1954 (Chandernagor), and in 1956 ( part of Bihar). The state is mostly low-lying and is crossed by the Hooghly River.
