The Republic if Yemen is a country in Arabia. The area occupied by Yemen was part of the Ottoman empire until it secured independence in 1911, and in 1937 the British instituted a protectorate in the south of the country. In 1962 armed resistance to British rule flared up and caused the split of the country into North yemen (The Yemen Arab Republic) and South Yemen (The People's Democratic Republic of Yemen) and civil war lasted until 1990 when the two countries were united as the Reublic of Yemen.
