The Probert Encyclopaedia of Places of the World

ZIMBABWE

The Republic of Zimbabwe is a country in central Africa, formerly a British territory called Southern Rhodesia after Cecil Rhodes and later Rhodesia, the area was initially developed and administered by the British South Africa Company. It has a total area of 390,580 km2. The climate is tropical and moderated by altitude with a rainy season from November to March. The terrain is mostly high plateau with higher central plateau (high veld) and mountains in the east. Natural resources are coal, chromium ore, asbestos, gold, nickel, copper, iron ore, vanadium, lithium and tin. The religion is 50% syncretic (part Christian, part indigenous beliefs), 25% Christian, 24% indigenous beliefs, and a few Muslims. The official language is English with Shona and Ndebele also spoken.
