The corner-stone of the Capitol building at Washington was laid by President George Washington, September 18, 1793. The north wing was completed on November 17th, 1800. The south wing-was completed in 1808, and the interior of both was burned by the British on August 24th, 1814. Reconstruction was begun in 1815. The foundation of the main building was laid on March the 24th 1818, and the whole was completed in 1827. The act of September 30, 1850, provided for an extension.
