DRAWING-ROOM

A drawing-room was traditionally a room to which the ladies withdrew (whence the name) or retired to after dinner, leaving the men to their port, cigars and talk. In general terms, drawing-room became a room appropriated for the reception of company; a room in which distinguished personages hold levees, or private persons receive parties.
