QUADRATUS FEMORIS

The quadratus femoris, as its name implies, is quadrilateral (square) in shape. It is a short, flat muscle that originates from the upper lip of the ischium (hip) and runs horizontally to the upper part of the femur. It is innervated by the sacral plexus and supplied by the inferior gluteal artery. This muscle helps rotate the thigh.

QUADRATUS LUMBORUM

The quadratus lumborum is a deep muscle of the abdomen. It originates from the crest of the ilium and the transverse processses of the lower lumbar vertebrae and extends to the last rib. Four small tendons also extend to the transverse processes of the upper lumbar vertebrae. The quadratus lumborum is innervated by the upper lumbar nerves and supplied by the lumbar arteries. This muscle assists in breathing by pulling down the last rib and helps flex the trunk.

QUADRATUS PLANTAE

The quadratus plantae (flexor accessorius; pronator pedis) lies on the sole of the foot. It has two heads that originate from the lateral and medial border of the calcaneus and inserts in the tendons of the flexor digitorum longus. This muscle assists the flexor digitorum longus in flexing the toes for the final push-off in walking and running. It also flexes the foot. The quadratus plantae is innervated by the plantar nerve and supplied by the plantar artery.

QUADRICEPS

The quadriceps muscle group consists of four muscles: the rectus femoris, the vastus lateralis, the vastus intermedius, and the vastus medialis. They form a large fleshy mass that covers the front and sides of the femur and work as the primary extensor of the knee.

QUININE

Quinine is an anti-malaria drug derived from the bark of the cinchona tree (Jesuit's Bark). It was first discovered in 1820 by Pelletier and Caventou and the first artificial quinine was prepared in 1865 by Scott. Contrary to popular opinion, the use of quinine has not entirely superseded the use of quinine containing barks in medicine, bark is still used in the Caribbean and South America for the treatment of fever and other ills.

QUINOLONE

Quinolone is an anabolic steroid. It causes increased protein synthesis and amino acid consumption, androgensisis, catabolism, and gluticocototitosis. It is used for sports performance enhancement, relief and recovery from common injuries, rehabilitation, weight control, anti-insomnia, and regulation of sexuality, aggression, and cognition.
