The Bishop was a British self-propelled gun of the Second World War. The Bishop was designed to relieve the North African 25-pounder batteries of their role as anti-tank weapons, and was first produced in 1941. A 25-pounder gun was mounted on a Valentine tank chassis in a high sided slab turret, a design flaw as the turret proved an easy target for defenders, and restricted the gun's elevation and traverse. The Bishop was then diverted to artillery use before being replaced by the newly arriving American M7 Priest guns. The Bishop was manned by a crew of four and powered by an AEC six-cylinder diesel engine providing a top speed of 24 kmh and a range of 175 km. The Bishop self-propelled guns were replaced by the Sexton, and declared obsolete in late 1944.
