The YW531 (Type 63 APC) is a range of Chinese first generation PLA armoured personnel carriers. They have a basic straight forward 1960's design consisting of an armoured box with a 12.7 mm machine-gun mounted on top. Development of the YW531 started in 1958 with final approval received in 1963. The YW531A model appeared in 1970 and the much improved YW 531B in 1981. In 1982 the type was further improved and named the YW531C. Various models are produced including; the YW304, an 82 mm self-propelled mortar; the YW381 a 120 mm self-propelled mortar; YW750, an armoured ambulance. They carry a crew of two, and have a troop capacity of 13 men in the APC variants, and have a top speed of 40 mph and a water crossing speed of 4 mph.
