The Probert Encyclopaedia of Warfare

DAISY CUTTER

A daisy cutter was an anti-personnel weapon used by the US Marine Corps during the Second World War. It consisted of a 100 lb high-explosive bomb wrapped with belts of 0.30 inch calibre machine-gun ammunition.

DARNE

The Darne was a French gas-operated machine-gun produced from 1922 to 1939. It was chambered for the 7.5 mm French Service round which was fed from a 100 or 250-round metal belt system, with a rate of fire of 650 rounds-per-minute. They were used by a number of European countries to equip aircraft during the 1930s. Various models were produced using belt and magazine feeds and in various calibres.

DEGTYAREV DP

The Degtyarev DP was a Soviet light machine-gun produced from 1928 to 1941, entering service with the Russian army in 1928 and remaining in service with infantry squads until the 1950s. It takes a 7.62 mm x 54R cartridge from a 47-round drum magazine and fires in automatic mode only at a cyclic rate of 550 or 600 rounds-per-minute and a muzzle velocity of 840 meters per second to an effective range of 800 meters. The Degtyarev DP has a 605 mm long barrel and is fitted with a cylindrical post foresight and a leaf tangent with a V rearsight.

DEGTYAREV DPM

The Degtyarev DPM was a Soviet light machine-gun produced from 1941 to 1950, and was a modification of the Degtyarev DP which replaced the Degtyarev DP in the army. It had the same specifications as the earlier Degtyarev DP, the modifications being primarily structural to improve reliability in the field.

DEGTYAREV DT

The Degtyarev DT was a Soviet light machine-gun produced from 1929 to 1945. It was a variant of the Degtyarev DP designed for use in armoured fighting vehicles. It had a heavier barrel, two-layer 60-round magazine and was fitted with a telescoping metal butt and pistol grip. To allow it to be used outside the vehicle, provision was provided for the addition of a bipod. It was chambered for the 7.62 mm cartridge and had a rate of fire of 600 rounds-per-minute.

DSHK

The DShK (Degtyarev DSh K-38) is a Russian 12.7 mm gas operated automatic air-cooled heavy machine-gun developed during the 1930s, and produced from 1938 to 1980. The DShK is chambered for the 12.7 mm x 108 cartridge which it takes from a 50-round belt feed and fires at a cyclic rate of 575 rounds per minute with a muzzle velocity of 860 meters per second to an effective range of 2000 meters. The DShK has a 1070 mm long barrel and is fitted with a cylindrical post foresight and a vertical leaf with U rearsight. For infantry use the DShK was typically mounted on a Sokolov wheeled mount. During the 1970's an improved model with a longer barrel appeared mounted on Soviet tanks.

DUX 53

The DUX 53 was a German blowback operated sub-machine-gun based upon the Finnish Suomi M1944 and produced for the West German border guards in 1954. The DUX 53 was chambered for the 9 mm Parabellum cartridge which it took from a 50-round Suomi box magazine and fired at a cyclic rate of 500 rounds per minute and a muzzle velocity of 381 meters per second. The DUX 53 had a folding stock and a 251 mm long barrel. It had a blade foresight and a flip notch rearsight.
