The Owen machine-carbine was an Australian blowback operated, selective fire sub-machine-gun developed for use in jungle warfare and designed by Lieutenant Evelyn Owen, being adopted for use in 1941 and produced until 1944. The Owen was chambered for the 9 mm cartridge which it took from a 32-round box mounted on top of the receiver. It had a cyclic rate of 700 rounds-per-minute and an effective range of 200 meters with a muzzle velocity of 366 meters-per-second. The Owen was renowned for its reliability, and various models were produced. The original model was lightened in a later model by having holes cut in the frame and the fins removed from the barrel.
