The Thompson sub-machine-gun was an American weapon developed from the 1920s. It took a .45 inch round from a 50-round drum or 20-round box. It had a 267 mm long barrel, a cyclic rate of 700 rounds-per-minute and a muzzle velocity of 281 meters-per-second. The original Thompson M1921 was slightly modified to the M1928 which was adopted for service with the American Marines and later evolved into the simplified model M1 which was developed in 1942 with out a locking breech, but using a simple blowback operation.

The Norinco Type 79 is a Chinese low-cost sub-machine-gun made from steel stampings. It is chambered for the Soviet 7.62 mm Pistol cartridge and takes a 20-round magazine. The rate of fire is selective fully automatic at 650 rounds-per-minute with a muzzle velocity of 500 meters-per-second.

The Type 85 is a Chinese low-cost sub-machine-gun forming a variant of the Type 79 Sub-machine-gun with a cylindrical receiver and taking a larger 30-round box magazine. A silenced version is also produced.

The Type 96 LMG was a Japanese gas-operated automatic light machine-gun introduced in 1936 as a replacement for the Taisho 11. The Type 96 LMG was chambered for the 6.5 mm Arisaka rifle (38th Year) round which it took from a 30-round box magazine and fired with a cyclic rate of 550 rounds per minute and a muzzle velocity of 732 meters per second to an effective range of 500 meters. The Type 96 LMG had a 551 mm long barrel and was fitted with a 2.5 x magnification telescopic sight and frequently a bayonet.

The Type 99 LMG was a Japanese gas-operated automatic light machine-gun developed as a modification of the Type 96 LMG to fire the then new 7.7 mm rimless round. The Type 99 LMG took a 30-round box magazine and had a cyclic rate of 850 rounds per minute and a muzzle velocity of 731 meters per second. The barrel was reduced to 546 mm long and fitted with a flash hider and a long bayonet fitted to the front of the gas cylinder.

The TZ-45 was an Italian blowback operated sub-machine-gun produced from 1944 to 1945 for use by the Italian army. After the war the production facilities were sold to Burma who manufactured the weapon as the BA-52 for the Burmese army from 1952 to 1955, with very slight modifications. The TZ-45 takes the 9mm Parabellum cartridge from a 20 or 40 round box magazine and has a rate of fire of 550 rounds-per-minute.
