UNITED DEFENSE M42

The United Defense M42 was an American made sub-machine-gun manufactured by Marlin for the US government from 1938 to 1940. Some 15000 guns were produced, which then disappeared, probably to clandestine organisations in Europe and the Far East. A large quantity certainly went to the Netherlands government forces in the Dutch East Indies. The M42 was chambered for the 9mm Parabellum cartridge which it took from a 20 round magazine and fired at a rate of 700 rounds per minute. The M42 was equipped with a fire selector lever on the right side of the receiver above the trigger which could select between single-shot and automatic fire modes. Unusually, if the safety catch was on and the weapon was then cocked, the safety would be removed and the weapon set to single shot mode.
