NIGHTINGALE FLOOR

A nightingale floor was a specially constructed wooden floor used in some Japanese castles. The floor boards were nailed down in such a way that the nails touched the side of small metal plates under the floor and the boards could flex slightly when walked upon. In this way, any assassin attempting to creep across the floor would be announced by the sound of the nails rubbing against the metal plates, issuing a high pitched sound not unlike the song of a nightingale.
