QUARTER STAFF

Picture of Quarter staff

The Quarter staff was an old English weapon formed of a stout pole about two metres long and generally loaded with iron at both ends. In use it was held by one hand in the centre, and the other hand between the centre and the end. In the attack the latter hand was shifted from one quarter of the staff to the other, giving the weapon a rapid circular motion.

QUINTAIN

Picture of Quintain

A quintain was a figure or other object set up to be tilted at with a lance. Quintains were constructed in various ways, a common form in England consisted of an upright post, on the top of which was a horizontal bar turning on a pivot. To one end of the horizontal bar was hung a sand-bag and at the other end a broad board or target. The trial of skill was for the knight to tilt at the target with his lance and then pass on before the bag of sand could whirl round and strike him on the back.
